Chalk paint has taken the DIY world – if not the whole world – by storm!

A lean away from modernism and a sway towards the shabby chic/boho trends have given sales of chalk paint a major boost.

Chalk Paint, the best bang for your buck!

Why buy brand new when you can repaint and re-purpose your existing items? A gorgeous splash of color might be all you need and this paint is perfect for this.

First of all, you could buy cheap second-hand items from a local thrift store or garage sale. Then you can throw on a coat of this great paint, and find yourself with a bespoke item of furniture unique to you and your home!

Wait a minute, I can do this!

The best thing about chalk paint is that it is so easy. With this type of paint there is no need for all the hassle and stress that comes with other paints. Chalk paint because of it’s matt finish, hides a multitude of sins. It’s great for covering mild imperfections. No major sanding, priming or stripping of old paint is required. Just choose your project, your color or colors, and begin!

Why chalk paint?

Chalk paints are very eco-friendly. They are in low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and they are odor-free. This makes them perfect for those with kids or pets, or who really care about their air quality and the environment.

The paint itself gives a very matte finish and colors seem to be a little more muted. Consequently, chalk paint applies itself so well to the vintage theme.

Being water based, any mishaps can easily be cleared up. Note that this means that sealant is probably required to make your masterpiece water tight. At least two coats of paint will generally be needed. Finally, it is usually recommended to apply a varnish or wax.

Not everyone uses the wax, but it will give you a unique look. Both light and dark waxes are available. Light wax is the initial invisible coating. Otherwise, dark wax can be used to ‘muddy’ the finished look, creating a worn-in antique appearance.

The finished look of chalk paint

Going back to the popular shabby chic trend, chalk paint can easily be distressed, giving your finished project that vintage feel. If this is your aim, this paint is perfect. Distressing is, of course optional. In addition, an ordinary but beautiful finish can also be achieved.

What else can I use chalk paint for?

Why stop with wooden furniture? Chalk paint can usually cover virtually any surface – plastic, metal, brick … again, all with no prep. It’s possible to revamp your entire apartment using only tins of this wonderful paint.
